Summary
Alpaca VC is an all-grit, no-bullshit team of six investors who are committed to finding and supporting the best founders throughout the formative years of the startup lifecycle. We are a highly engaged team that blends collaboration and autonomy, and who values results and learning over rigid office hours. Everyone on the team is a solo-preneuer, yet no one hesitates to ask for help or assistance. We've been lucky to partner with top portfolio companies, including Compass, Sandbox, Latch, Imperfect Foods, Upstream, Transfix, FirstBase, Monument, and more.
We are looking to add a new Investor Associate to our team at Alpaca VC! This is an exciting opportunity for someone with technical expertise (read: artificial intelligence / machine learning chops) looking to break into venture and get meaningful exposure to many facets of the industry: founders, other investors, and deal structure/terms and operators. This role has exposure to a wide variety of deals, and demands creative, "out of the box" thinking. We are looking for someone with a founder mentality β someone who seeks out responsibility, is comfortably being scrappy, forms strong opinions, leverages a unique skill set, and is hungry to develop personally and professionally.
In this role, you will support a critical business function β evaluating potential deals β and will help us to complete research on companies and perform due diligence so we can make quick investments with conviction. It's a chance to partner closely with the entire team and in doing so develop impactful relationships.
You will work primarily with one of our General Partners, Aubrie Pagano, on Commerce Tech initiatives β everything from supply chain to consumer tech β but your technical skillset will be valuable to the broader team. Due to a relationship with a Limited Partner (an investor in our Funds), this role is based in Alberta, with travel across Canada and the U.S.
Responsibilities
- Be a core part of our seven-person investment team
- Perform background research on potential company investments to develop an opinion on the risks and upside of investment
- Draft recommendation memos to inform senior team members of the pros and cons of investing in a company
- Meet with founders and operators to better understand their company, how they plan to go beyond their seed stage, and in so doing strike a balance between learning about them and showing them the value of joining the Alpaca community
- Attend events, network in the broader Canadian ecosystem, and be a brand champion of the firm
- Build a strong presence and brand recognition within the emerging Alberta tech ecosystem
- Active and constructive participation in firm-wide meetings
Qualifications
- Curious and passionate about start-ups and technology
- Intrigued by technical developments and how they can solve real-world problems
- An uncanny ability to take incomplete information about a company and quickly build out a more complete picture of their future (think solving a puzzle)
- Very strong written skills and can communicate verbally with internal team members and potential founders
- A natural networker and bridge-builder; someone who likes making connections and building relationships within the broader venture ecosystem
- Good at striking a balance between craftsmanship (care for the quality of your work) with pragmatism (good enough is good enough)
- Willing to do whatever it takes β including support work β because you want to support the team
- Completed Bachelors degree and 3-5 years of relevant work experience
- Adventure-seeking; a desire to be ahead of all the new trends and participate and lead conversations around them
- Highly proficient in PowerPoint, Salesforce, Notion, and creating decks
- Proficient in Excel and modeling, including an understanding of returns-based analysis as well as fundamentals of corporate finance
- Superior quantitative and analytical skills

- Possesses a strong set of personal business values that coincide with that of the firm
- Ability to balance a high level of personal motivation and a hands-on approach with a focus on the shared success of the firm and its investors
- High degree of intellectual curiosity; constantly seeking the creation of business value
